Our 100 Year History
1907-1929 Calvary Pentecostal
Church , located in
Simcoe ,
Ontario , emerged from the first recorded Pentecostal tent meetings held in
Canada. In 1907 tent meetings were held in Fred Post's Grove, a peach orchard at Normandale, as an outreach of the Toronto Hebden Mission. As people came to know Christ the tent meetings gave way to gatherings in local cottages and homes.
The road from Post Grove led the fledgling congregation to rented halls in Simcoe over the Pool Hall and the Chinese Laundry on Robinson Street prior to the purchase of a building on Queen St. that today is used as a duplex. Sister works were formed at Elmwood and over the
Port
Dover
Town hall as outreaches from Simcoe.
In 1929 Calvary Pentecostal Tabernacle became affiliated with The Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada and constructed their first church building on Talbot Street , at the current site of Simcoe Little Theatre. The congregation was only able to build the basement and worshiped for several years in the flat roofed basement. Rev Wilson Shirley pastored the church from 1929 to 1932.
